An Alaska Airlines plane and a SkyWest Airlines flight came a bit too close to each other. The situation unfolded last Monday at about 4:15 p.m. local time when an Alaska Airlines flight from California abandoned its landing attempt at the Portland airport due to bad weather — just as a SkyWest Airlines flight departed from the same airport. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the pilot of Alaska Airlines Flight 1299 initiated a standard maneuver known as a "go-around" due to wind while attempting to land at the airport and turned toward SkyWest Airlines Flight 3978, which had just taken off. "An air traffic controller instructed the Alaska Airlines pilot to turn away from the SkyWest aircraft," the FAA told Insider in a statement. SkyWest Airlines told Insider that the flight "departed normally with pilots following air traffic control instructions and landed routinely at Seattle."

NEW YORK, July 5 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Paramount Global’s (PARA.O) predicament is worthy of its successful “Mission: Impossible” franchise. Over the past year or so, Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway (BRKa.N) has bought and increased its stake in Paramount to about 15%. Without the funding, her closely held firm might have needed to pledge more of its Paramount stock against a loan. Streaming service Paramount+ is similar to Netflix, whose enterprise is worth 5 times next year’s estimated revenue. “Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One,” from Paramount Pictures, opens in movie theaters on July 12.

CNN —Apple on Tuesday announced a series of new accessibility tools for the iPhone and iPad, including a feature that promises to replicate a user’s voice for phone calls after only 15 minutes of training. With an upcoming tool called Personal Voice, users will be able to read text prompts to record audio and have the technology learn their voice. A related feature called Live Speech will then use the “synthesized voice” to read the user’s typed text aloud during phone calls, FaceTime conversations and in-person conversations. In the blog post, Apple said the Personal Voice feature uses “on-device machine learning to keep users’ information private and secure.”Other tech companies have experimented with using AI to replicate a voice. In addition to the voice features, Apple announced Assistive Access, which combines some of the most popular iOS apps, such as FaceTime, Messages, Camera, Photos, Music and Phone, into one Calls app.

WASHINGTON, Nov 3 (Reuters) - Defense lawyers on Thursday opened their case in the trial of Oath Keepers leader Stewart Rhodes and four others over their alleged roles in the attack on the U.S. Capitol, arguing the defendants were in Washington to do security work and did not plot to stop the transfer of presidential power. The first defense witness, Watkins’ fiancé Montana Siniff, testified that Watkins had had no intention to try to stop the election certification. Prosecutors presented evidence including text and audio communications among the defendants in the run-up to Jan. 6, and called witnesses including FBI agents and former members of the Oath Keepers. Stanley Woodward, an attorney for Meggs, said in an opening statement that he would present an alternative motive for Meggs' actions. Rhodes, a Yale-educated attorney and former U.S. Army paratrooper, is expected to take the stand at some stage as the defense presents its case.
